Neudorf Moutere Chardonnay 2017

Vintage

Variety

Colour

Pale straw/gold with lime tones, lively in the glass

Aroma

Restrained and elegant rather than big and oaky but with layers of stonefruit and malo complexity. Slight salty mineral background notes.

Taste & Other Notes

Creamy, round textures upfront are quickly overcome by mouth-watering ripe acidity before settling into a long saline-like, mineral finish. The stonefruit aromas carry through the palate but are enhanced by subtle cashew nut and elegant oak influence.

This is a wine of finesse, elegance, structure and imposition, it demands your attention as the flavours and textures open up on the palate.

Many years of personal experience cellaring Neudorf Moutere Chardonnay tells me that while this is a young wine it has huge potential to age gracefully, the ripe acidity will give it many years life while the fruit has an underlying power that will stand the test of time. Drink 2020 to 2030. – 5 stars

What others have to say

Raymond Chan writes “18.5+/20 The nose is very elegant, fresh and vibrant with good depth of white and yellow stonefruits, along with subtle nutty oak and creamy barrel-ferment hints, unfolding mouthwatering mineral detail. The fruit and oak builds in concentration and intensity with aeration, developing fine nuance. Medium-full bodied, the palate is elegant in presentation with brisk, refreshing and lively flavours of white and yellow stonefruits along with subtle notes of nutty oak. The palate is one of finesse, freshness and vibrancy, and builds a fine core with good acid vitality. The flavours flow along a very fine line leading to a fresh, detailed finish. Serve with seafood over the next 4+ years. 100% hand-picked Mendoza clone fruit from the ‘Home’ block, WBP and fully indigenous yeast barrel-fermented with high solids to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 12 months on full lees in 12% new French oak, undergoing batonnage and MLF, then given a further 4 months on lees in tank. 362 cases made. Certified BioGro organic.”

The producer says

We’ve been producing Chardonnay since 1981 and over the past 37 vintages we’ve learnt to relax and let it be. Our soils, climate and minimal interventionist winemaking enable the pedigree to exhibit itself year after year.

The Neudorf Moutere style is assured – never too overt, everything in balance with moreish salty tang, reminiscent of sun-dried oyster shells. It’s always surprisingly long with a final fan of flavour at the end of the palate. It offers a transparent, crystalline appeal. The oak over the years has slowly been dialled back. Todd uses only 10% new barrels and the oak is beautifully absorbed into the wine.

Over the years the wine has earned a reputation for consistency and class. It is still the only wine which has been granted 100 points from Bob Campbell MW.

The 2017 vintage has given us a slightly more generous nose and finish. It is still destined for the long haul but this vintage is approachable a little earlier than many.

It is a classic.

Note this is the smallest vintage since 2003.
